This week’s class topic was teaching speaking skill. It is an extremely interesting topic for me because I strongly believe that speaking is the very heart of the language. In addition, more than a receptive skill it is an productive skill. Here is the question then. How can we manage to make our students productive in terms of speaking ability?
In terms of accuracy and fluency, I think both of them are essential. In my opinion we should concentrate only one of them each time because it is almost impossible to ask for both of them at the same time. It had better to emphasize the importance of accuracy in grammar classes and the importance of fluency in speaking classes.
To be able to speak properly in the target language students need to be familiar with target culture, too. This is really a hot potato issue. Should we teach or exposed the students to the target language’s culture or not. We had harsh arguments during undergraduate years about this issue. I think it depends on the context.
Peer review of Final portfolio was quite useful, because we need help for this amount of workload.
I started to worry about my presentation. Could you please share your opinions about the presentations? It would be great to hear some suggestions.
