Assigned Reading Reflections (Reading/Week10-3/16/2009)

An ESOL teacher should bear in mind that a great amount of input comes through reading. In this sense, especially extensive reading is significantly important in language teaching. On the other hand it is obvious that people can spend hours and hours in front of computer screen but most of them cannot stand to read even for ten minutes. It is clear that people lost their passion and skill to read. Why is that? What can we do as teachers? How can we prove that reading is fun?
In my opinion, reading should be for pleasure. The classrooms should be designed accordingly. Teachers should read by themselves, in the class so that they could raise students’ awareness. It is a scientific fact that reading helps in mental development. Reading helps people to have information on various topics. Because of all those reasons reading should be promoted in language classrooms.
