Assigned Reading Reflection (Context of Teaching/Oct.13/Week8)

While I was reading this week’s assigned reading I thought about my country, Turkey. English is a foreign language in Turkey. Although it is taught mostly by nonnative English-speaking teachers still it is taught by a small percentage of native English-speaking teachers especially in private courses and schools in metropolitan cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir etc. Because of globalization and great developments in the field of technology and communication English has gained a significant attention not only in my country but also in all over the world over past decades. More and more people want to learn English day by day and since there is a significant amount of young population in my country the government wants to educate them properly. In terms of English language policy the government signed European Language Policy which promotes multilingualism and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). English language education starts at fourth grade –ten years old- at public schools and it is compulsory foreign language until 12 grade at high schools. Generally college students have to attend one year English prep class to continue their education in most number of majors. There are lots of state and private adult education center offering English courses for adults.

It’s very interesting that English is required in Turkey for so long. It’s amazing the amount of English spoken around the world.
